By far the easiest way to get promoted (beyond very junior levels) is by changing jobs every 2 years. And by "changing jobs" I do not mean changing jobs within the same company. I mean changing them for real. That way employers have to compete. If they already have you, there's very little incentive to give you more money or responsibility.
