You would have been stupid to spend the bitcoins last year only if the value of having a motorcycle for a year was less than the accrued value of the bitcoins as they appreciated in value over that time. Because people cannot predict the value of bitcoins over time perfectly, and because the satisfaction of immediate needs/wants is often more important than a greater later return, bitcoins would always be spent even in a deflationary system.
