We get a LOT more years per dollar now than we did in the past, simply because things are costing a fraction now. We can buy those ten compressors and still come out ahead.
The thing is though, we don't WANT to do that. If we knew we could get better quality by paying more, I think many would. But I don't trust that, so I just accept that my new fridge will last not very long, and I get the one that's recommened.
And the problem with this is of course that you can't win by making a fridge and claiming it lasts longer because it would be decades before anyone trusts you. A brand that bet on being the long life fridge brand selling expensive fridges would have a hard time building that reputation.
