And the long that goes on, the bigger the risk of things not working. It could be that the longer it goes on the less relevant it becomes, but it will still hang over my head.

"Just in case" what, though? What problem are you thinking you might have that would only be solvable by digging through a bunch of old documents?

It's hard for me to imagine a problem that could only be solved in that way, or in fact that could be solved that way at all.
